Boycott GM and Chrysler?
I have a good friend that works for GM. He told me yesterday that things are not that bad. I’m hoping he is right. But then I read this:
“… Obama’s agents used threats and intimidation (calling holdout bondholders speculators and hedge funds at one point) to get the creditors to accept being shafted. (WSJ.com 5/11/09)The result is that the vast majority of the two companies will be almost clearly owned by the federal government and the UAW, and the UAW arguably controls the federal government.
The result is drenched in irony. The UAW was a major reason why the companies hit the wall, and now the UAW will be rewarded with major control and ownership. It is as if a rape victim were forced to marry her rapist. The result makes the crony capitalism we saw in Russia look clean by comparison; it, at least, was a kind of capitalism….”

The Ethical Case for Boycotting Chrysler and GM
By Gary Jason
Mr. Jason is a business ethics instructor which makes his perspective on this issue authoritative. He uses four ethical theories that have been “… the ones considered most plausible in over two millennia of moral philosophy… ” to make his case.
I own a GM vehicle. I was proud when I purchased it recently. I felt I was supporting the US auto industry besides satisfying my own personal needs. But I may take the first opportunity to jump ship and buy a Ford as I stated in my article “A Cadillack of Faith.” Most folks are not so idealogically motivated as me. But Mr. Jason makes a great case for being so. I will never again support any industry that has been nationalized. Period!
Any industry that is controlled by the government, without exception, will be a seedbed of cronyism, favoritism and corruption. It is the legacy of most of the societies south of the Rio Grande. This foolishness needs to be stopped!
